Suspected killer Zlatko Sikorsky in custody after 28-hour siege

A siege that went on for 28 hours at a Sunshine Coast unit block has ended, with Australia's most wanted man, Zlatko Sikorsky, surrendering to police.

Sikorsky was wanted by police over the discovery of a woman's body in a barrel in the back of a ute on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old had been on the run for more than 48 hours before barricading himself in a home inside the unit block at 3pm yesterday.

The lengthy negotiations ended at 6.30pm when Sikorsky surrendered. He has been taken to Maroochydore Watch House.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Superintendent Darryl Johnson thanked residents of Alexandra Headland for their patience.

“It was important to give our negotiators the time and space to help us resolve this peacefully – and I am relieved that we have been able to take this man into custody without him, any member of the public or any of our officers being hurt,” Supt Johnson said.

Authorities were hunting Sikorsky over the disappearance of missing teenager Larissa Beilby, who has not contacted her family since June 18.

Sikorsky fled a property at Buccan in a black ute when police arrived after reviewing CCTV footage at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Officers then tracked the badly damaged vehicle to a caravan park in Stapylton near the Gold Coast a short time later where it is understood Sikorsky threatened a resident with a shotgun.

"He pulled out a shotgun and said to me and my partner 'I'll give you $2000 if you let me in the gate right now'," the woman, who did not want to be named, said.

As they lifted an entry gate at the front of the complex, the woman said she saw a blue barrel in the tray with "an arm flapping out".

Police found a decomposing body in a barrel in the tray of a black Holden ute in Stapylton. Police are yet to formally identify the victim but it is understood to be that of Ms Beilby.

Ms Beilby was living in emergency accommodation to escape her former violent boyfriend only to end up with Sikorsky, who is twice her age.

She told her friends she was scared to tell him her age and that he had a gun.

Police have had a warrant to arrest Sikorsky since March 15, after he breached his parole conditions.
