Pedestrians struck by car in Melbourne CBD

Office worker Karen told 3AW that she was leaving work when she saw a car driving erratically along Collins Street before it turned into William Street.

"I heard an almighty screech of tyres and and saw (the car) come up Collins Street, it hit a car in Collins, turned into William and hit a car and was speeding up William and has gone through red light," she said.

"And I just thought I hope no one gets hit, he just didn't care about lights or anything, I feel quite shaken.

"It looked like a small white car, like a Honda."

Witness John also told the radio station that he saw pedestrians on the ground on A'Beckett Street.

"They were lying on the footpath, people were attending to them," he said, adding that the whole front of the car was smashed in.

Troy Naismith was watching from the balcony of City Tempo apartments when the stolen car raced down A'Beckett Street.

"He came up over the gutter, hit a signpost. He hit this car like a pool table, ping-ponged into the traffic light, knocked it over and ran down the road. I wanted to come over and help but there were already people helping," he said.

Troy says he thinks either the car hit someone or the traffic light fell and hit someone.

"I hope whoever it was is OK," Troy said.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the initial call came in at 5.17pm that a car had hit a group of people.

"We have one patient, we treated a man in his 20s-30s and he was taken by road ambulance to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition," she said.

She said Ambulance Victoria then received a call at 5.25pm of reports of a car hitting a traffic pole on the intersection of Collins Street and Market Street.

"Two patients were assessed at scene, both refused to be transported to hospital, both are in a stable condition," she said.

More to come.
