Manhunt underway after alleged attack on Melbourne woman coming home from night out

Police have arrested a man and are still searching for another over the alleged sexual assault of a woman who was picked up by a vehicle after a night out in inner Melbourne.

Police on Thursday said the woman, aged in her 30s, had caught a taxi with a friend from a nightclub in the city to the corner of Lygon and Grattan streets in Carton about 4:30am on Sunday June 17.

Investigators said they believed the woman was picked up by a vehicle after she became separated from her friend, and was later sexually assaulted.

After a public appeal for witnesses to come forward, a 23-year-old man from Doreen, in the city's north, presented himself at Mernda police station.

He was arrested and is being interviewed, police said.

Police said detectives are also searching for 26-year-old Harley Palise in relation to alleged incident.

The Doreen man is described as being 185 centimetres tall with a solid build, short brown hair and hazel eyes.

Anyone who sees him is being urged to call triple-0.

Police had released images of three men who were captured in CCTV footage in the Grattan St area at the time, and who police believed were witnesses.

They attended Epping police station and spoke with investigators, police said.

The alleged assault took place just days after a 19-year-old man was charged with the rape and murder of Eurydice Dixon, whose body was found at Princes Park, not far from Lygon St.
