Darling Range by-election: Labor concedes defeat as Liberals regain WA seat

The Liberal Party has won the Darling Range by-election in Western Australia, regaining the seat vacated by former Labor-turned-independent MP Barry Urban.

With more than 61 per cent of the votes counted, there has been a 9.8 per cent swing from Labor to the Liberals after preferences, leaving the Opposition with 54 per cent of the vote on a two-party basis.

Premier Mark McGowan and Labor's candidate Tania Lawrence have conceded defeat and congratulated the Liberals and their candidate Alyssa Hayden.

The result comes more than a month after Mr Urban resigned from the WA Parliament before he could be sacked for repeatedly lying about his past.

Just weeks after Mr Urban's exit, Labor's first by-election candidate, Colleen Yates, quit the race when she admitted to misrepresenting her own education history.

The events proved too much for the party's second candidate, Ms Lawrence, to recover from.

More to come.
