Pedestrian and cars hit by vehicle in Melbourne

A DRIVER is on the run after a car has crashed into several vehicles and a pedestrian on a street in Melbourne’s CBD.

A witness said the car “ping-ponged” into cars and traffic lights, striking a man on the street before fleeing the scene on foot.

Police said the Toyota Camry hit three cars and a man on A’Beckett Street, shortly after police tried to intercept it on Flinders Street at about 5pm on Tuesday.

The driver of the car and a passenger, both of whom were men, abandoned the vehicle on A’Beckett Street, near Queen and Market St and fled on foot.

It is believed the allegedly stolen vehicle was travelling along Flinders street when police attempted to intercept it. Victoria police originally said authorities were investigating “after a vehicle struck around four pedestrians”, but later released a statement saying only one pedestrian had been injured.

“The Toyota Camry took off and has struck three vehicles travelling on A’Beckett Street and a male pedestrian,” a police statement read.

Police do not believe the incident is terror related but have urged people to avoid the area.

Witness Troy Naismith said he watched from his balcony as a car hit at least one other vehicle and a traffic light within about 20 seconds on A’Beckett street, before its driver fled.

“He ping-ponged into this car here, into the traffic light, knocked the traffic light over, and then hopped out the car and ran off up the road,” Mr Naismith told reporters at the scene.

The driver of the stolen vehicle and a passenger allegedly abandoned the car and fled on foot. They are yet to be located.

“The driver is perceived to be caucasian, approximately 183cm tall with his hair tied back and was wearing a high vis top,” the police statement continued.

“The passenger is perceived to be caucasian with a solid build short brown hair, aged in his 20s-30s and was wearing a grey top.”

The injured male pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police are urging people to avoid the area due to road closures as they investigate the incident.

The incident is not being treated as terror related.

Police are urging members of the public to avoid the area.
