Killer Neville Towner dies aged 52

Convicted killer Neville Raymond Towner has died aged 52.

Towner, who was jailed for the murder of four-year-old Lauren Hickson in 1989, is believed to have suffered a heart attack and died in Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospital.

He was just days away from finding out if he would be granted parole, with the State Parole Authority previously announcing it would make a decision on his future in June 29.

Towner was originally jailed for life, but a successful application for re-evaluation in 2009 meant parole became a possibility.

His release was vehemently opposed by Lauren's mother Jurina Hickson, and the police who originally caught him.

Lauren Hickson disappeared from outside her parents motorhome at the Nepean River Caravan Park in Emu Plains in 1989.

Her almost naked body was found the next morning floating in a creek which joined the Nepean River.

Towner later admitted to murdering the little girl who he had previously babysat.

Lauren's mother Jurina was vehemently opposed to Towner's release.

"She started screaming and to shut her up I shoved her head in the water and... when she came up she looked to me as if she had already gone. She started breathing, so I grabbed a rock and hit her with it," he told police.

Ms Hickson recently spoke to A Current Affair's Simon Bouda about her ongoing grief and her horror that Towner could be released.

"What he did to (Lauren), my gosh, what he did was unspeakable," she said.
