Gunman on the loose after tense stand-off in Melbourne

POLICE thought they had a gunman surrounded in a Melbourne home after he reportedly fired a rifle at two tradesmen this afternoon — but they have since discovered the home is empty.

A Victoria Police spokesman said officers were rying to talk him out of the Clayton South house in the city’s southeast. However, the gunman was not discovered inside and he is now on the run.

At 9pm, a police spokeswoman said: “Police gained entry into premises and found them unoccupied. Enquiries will continue into reports of a gunshot earlier in the afternoon.”

Officers closed Westall Rd northbound, near Heatherton Rd, after reports of shots being fired about 3.30pm.

A tradie told 7 News the gunman fired a rifle twice after an argument on a building site, with one of the bullets narrowly missing his workmate.

Local resident Kathleen, who lives in Orloff Close behind the home where the situation was unfolding, told Fairfax Media the house where the shots were reportedly fired is next door to a construction site.

“We can only hear police sirens and there are police parked blocking the street, but we didn’t hear anything else,” she said.

Police do not believe the man is on his own. The Critical Incident Response Team is at the scene.

Drivers have been advised to seek an alternative route.
