A woman has drowned while swimming at a lake in Victoria's east.

The woman was swimming in Lake Victoria at Forge Creek, near Paynesville, when she got into trouble about 1pm on Saturday, Victoria Police said.

“She was pulled from the water by family and friends, however was unable to be revived and died at the scene,” a police statement said. A report will now be prepared for the the coroner.

It's the fifth drowning death in the state since Christmas Eve, with authorities warning people to be mindful of water conditions.

Life Saving Victoria chief executive Nigel Taylor urged swimmers to check with local people about conditions at inland waterways, and to always swim at patrolled beaches.
