The mother of an 18-year-old killed in a horror collision with semi-trailer may not be aware her daughter is dead, after spending more than a fortnight sedated in hospital.
Maddison Spyve was driving with her mother Tammy on December 13 in the town of Feluga near Cairns, when the horror smash took the teen’s life.
Tammy remains heavily sedated in intensive care, with a range of serious injuries including multiple broken bones down the right side of her body.
Her son and Maddison’s brother, Jayden Allwood, said Tammy’s condition had not improved since the accident, saying his mother was “still in a lot of pain” and heavily medicated.
Mr Allwood said the mother and daughter had an incredibly strong bond, telling Yahoo7: “She was everything to mum.”
Maddison had just graduated from Tully High School.
“Mum worked two jobs just to help Maddi,” he said.
The teen was a talented musician who had a “knack” for every instrument she picked up, Mr Allwood said.
He is not sure if his mother remembers the accident at all and described her periods of consciousness for the past two weeks as fleeting.
“We can’t talk to her at the moment because of all the medication and sedation that she’s still on,” Mr Allwood said.
“It only lasts five or 10 seconds until she drifts back out of it.”
It’s unlikely she realises that her daughter has died.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist the family, so far raising more than $11,000. It describes the location of the crash as “a notorious accident hot spot”.
“No more families should have to go through the pain of losing a loved one on that road,” Mr Allwood said.
Over the last Christmas and New Year period, a total of 91 people lost their lives in road smashes across the country.
