Video: ‘Go back to China’ cop footage investigated by NSW Police - NEWS.com.au

New South Wales police are investigating footage that appears to show a senior constable telling a driver to “go back to China” before reaching into his car and hitting him.

The incident unfolded during a traffic stop on Marsden Rd in Carlingford in Sydney on Christmas Day, according to witness Caleb Strik, who filmed the entire exchange.

A series of videos — including one of Mr Strik confronting the officer over his behaviour — have been collectively viewed more than a million times on social media since Tuesday.

In the first clip, the senior constable, who is wearing a NSW Police Force vest, can he heard asking the driver where he is from.

The man’s reply is inaudible. The officer is seen shaking his head before saying: “Go back to China.”

The senior constable then holds up a “Stop Police” sign and asks the driver if he can read it before reaching in through driver’s side window to shove him.

Mr Strik also posted video of himself confronting the officer and his colleague at a nearby carpark.

“You hit him and you also told him ‘go back to China’. I got it on video,” he says in the footage.

The senior constable dismisses Mr Strik before telling him: “It’s got nothing to do with you … move away, you are harassing me.”

Mr Strik then turns to the officer’s female colleague and asks her if she witnessed him hit the driver and use racist language.

“What’s it have to do with you?” she responds.

“How can you do that, you’re a police officer?” Mr Strik asks.

Police officials today confirmed they were investigating the footage.

“NSW police is aware of the video posted on Facebook which will be reviewed in due course,” a police spokeswoman told news.com.au.

Many social media users heaped praise on Mr Strik for intervening on behalf of the driver.
