Gold Coast, Byron Bay shark warnings - NEWS.com.au

Sharks are circling close to shores around the country, prompting warnings for swimmers to stay out of the water or be alert.

Gold Coast canals which are known to be teeming with dangerous bull sharks are the latest warning spots after a family took a video of the animals feeding near the water’s edge.

Giant bull sharks have been regularly caught in Lake Orr, Varsity Lakes, where the latest video was taken.

In the video obtained by 9 Gold Coast News a child can be heard screaming and saying “it’s big!” as a family watches on.

It comes after a man posted a video of a shark in shallow water at Byron Bay yesterday.

“Byron main beach Boxing Day patrol. It will be fine they said, there is (sic) no waves, what could go wrong?”.

“He came up the inshore gutter into the flagged area. So, as he had a fin on I politely told him he wasn’t allowed between the flags and walked with him across the bank between the backpackers and out of the flags and no one was the wiser.”

While the shark didn’t appear to be large, one woman comments “it’s going to frighten people you know”.

Several Byron Bay beaches were closed yesterday after several shark sightings across the day.

Surf Lifesaving NSW duty officer Jimmy Keough urged swimmers to always follow all directions given by lifeguards and lifesavers on duty when sharks were in the area.

On the Gold Coast the council has erected signs alerting people of the dangers, with people taking their pets to the shallows for a splash and some even going for a dip.

Locals told 9 News Gold Coast they were not aware there were sharks in the water.

Local councillor Hermann Vorster said residents needed to adhere to warnings.

“Some people still ignore the signs and jump in,” he told 9.

“They’re putting themselves at risk but also the rescuers who might jump in after them. It’s just not on, they should stay out.”
