The 'Buddhist monk scam' is back in Australia

A GROUP of conmen dressed as Buddhist monks are fleecing unsuspecting Australians in an all-too-familiar scam.

The hoax involves men with shaven heads and orange robes asking for donations, sometimes in exchange for fake religious items.

Genuine Buddhist monks are not allowed to ask for money in accordance with their faith.

Police spoke to two of the men in the Perth CBD and confirmed they were not working for a legitimate charity, but were actually in Australia on tourist visas from China, Perth Now reports.

One of the men was reportedly showing people a booklet with evidence of generous donations in an attempt to get others to fork over their cash.

Earlier media reports show the scam has been around for years, typically taking place in major Australian cities like Melbourne and Sydney.

But it happens all over the world, including tourist-heavy cities like London and New York, as well as various countries in South-East Asia.
