Taxpayers could be forced to pay for 'inadequate' hospital rooms

South Australia’s new health minister Stephen Wade has warned taxpayers they may have to foot a multi-million dollar bill to fix a major problem at the state’s new Royal Adelaide hospital.

Doctors at the facility have said lives are being put at risk as a result of resuscitation and trauma rooms being too small.

The issue was first raised four months ago, and while a trial of minor changes is underway, Mr Wade has vowed to fix the problem.

“The resuscitation cases are the sickest of the sick…we need to make sure this hospital is fit for purpose…for whatever comes through the door,” he said today.

“It's very important that we fix these problems - it may come at substantial cost but it is certainly being treated as an urgent priority.”

One proposed solution is removing two of the rooms to make the remaining six bigger; an option which would cost taxpayers millions.

The health minister has blamed his predecessor, Peter Malinauskas, for the issue at hand.

“This is yet another example of (Mr Malinauskas) not being upfront with the people of South Australia about the problems in the health system under his watch,” Mr Wade said.

Mr Malinauskas again refused to speak on camera about the hospital's issues today, and instead issued a statement accusing the new minister of “playing politics rather than getting to work”.
