HE’S considered Australia’s best since Don Bradman but Steve Smith’s role in the ball tampering scandal has many calling for his head as skipper.
And according to Foxsports.com.au readers, Smith should be axed.
As of 7:45pm on Monday night, 26,800 or so readers had voted as to whether Smith should be sacked. 75 per cent said yes, with only 25 per cent saying he deserves another chance.
The reputation of Australia’s cricket team is in tatters after Smith and Cameron Bancroft confessed to coming up with a plan with senior players to cheat South Africa by tampering with the ball in the third Test.
While admitting his team and leadership group’s integrity has come into question an “embarrassed” Smith has declared he won’t resign. The star batsman has been banned for the fourth Test but will likely face stiffer punishment from Cricket Australia, with some calls for a lifetime ban.
“I still think I’m the right person for the job,” Smith said of his captaincy.
But many greats have a different view, calling for Smith, Warner and coach Darren Lehmann to resign.
