Police are investigating how a man and woman, whose bodies were found washed up on an island beach north of Brisbane, knew each other.
The man is understood to be a local Caloundra resident while the woman is an international tourist, however police have found it difficult to contact their families.
The pair had taken a jetski from the Bells Creek boat ramp, up Pumicestone Passage to the calm side of Bribie Island yesterday.
Their bodies were found today by a Department of National Parks employee performing turtle net inspections, three kilometres away on the ocean side of the island, clad only in swimwear.
It is unclear how the pair knew each other and no one had reported them missing.
Their deaths are being treated as suspicious.
Senior Sergeant Scott Wiggins said the pair was wearing swimsuits but not life jackets, and police had "concerns" for injuries found on their bodies.
“We are conducting examinations in relation to those injuries to see if they were caused by the environment,” he said.
The bodies of the man and the woman have been removed from the water as they begin to conduct early inquiries into the events leading up to their deaths.
They appear to have been in the water for some time.
"The most important thing we're trying to do at the moment is try to identify the next of kin ... to let them know what we have found,” he said.
"It's a magical part of the world and it's a very sad thing for the community to have something like this happen."
Police are appealing to members of the public to help them confirm the identity of the man and woman.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
