A car sits inside a large hole inside a brick house.

A car has smashed through the side of a home, ending up in its lounge room, after the driver lost control in Melbourne's west overnight.

Police said the occupants of the Point Cook home, a man and a woman, were upstairs at the time and escaped injury.

The driver was taken to hospital. She had non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

Police were not sure what caused the crash.

Senior Sergeant Rachell Field said police were called about 3:00am.

"They located a vehicle that had actually ended up in the lounge room of a residential premises," she said.

"The 21-year-old driver has been transported to hospital for treatment [for] not serious injuries."

Senior Sergeant Field said the residents had been evacuated.

"It's being structurally assessed at the moment by local council and they'll make a determination about when the residents can return," she said.
