A Russian tourist has died after he and his wife were swept off the rocks by huge swells at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

Russian DJ Andrei Ivanov, 47, and his wife Yulia, 45, were knocked off their feet at Mermaid Rocks on the beach’s north side and swept into the ocean by large waves on Saturday evening.

According to witnesses, Ms Ivanov was screaming as the attempts were made to find her husband in the waves. A man who was swimming nearby said Ms Ivanov tried to jump back into the water to find her husband.

“The woman was just trying to go and save her husband. I tried to stop her — do not go inside the water,” the man told 7 News.

“She was crying and shouting ‘My husband!’”

Lifesavers found Mr Ivanov’s body and hoisted it from the water and onto the beach, where a large crowd watched paramedics attempt to revive him.

NSW Ambulance duty operations manager Sally Groves said it was a “horrendous outcome”.

“Paramedics worked closely with other emergency services and did everything possible to try and save his life, but sadly he was unable to be saved,” she said.

“No matter what you are doing near the water, please be vigilant — it is not worth risking your life.”

Conditions at beaches across Sydney on Saturday were made dangerous by large waves generated by recent storms and the former Cyclone Usei’s passage off Australia’s east coast.

Nearby Coogee Beach was closed on Saturday, and the Bureau of Meteorology had a number of hazardous surf warnings in place across NSW, which were removed on Sunday.

According to the Royal Life Saving Society Australia, 62 people have died by drowning this summer.
