Man dies after being caught in rip at Diamond Beach - The Sydney Morning Herald

A man has died after he was caught in a rip at Diamond Beach on the NSW Mid North NSW coast on the last day of summer.

The man was swimming with a large group of family and friends on Saturday afternoon at the beach north of Forster when he and a female friend were swept out to deeper water by a rip, NSW Police said.

Another swimmer managed to rescue the woman, aged in her 20s, and bring her to shore.

The man, believed to 38 years old, was pulled unconscious from the water and witnesses performed CPR until police and paramedics arrived just after 6pm. He died at the scene.

Officers from Manning/Great Lakes Police District are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

The man is the 66th person to drown in Australian waterways this summer. In 2019 the national drowning toll was 276 people including 98 in NSW.
