Sydney thunderstorm lights up the night sky as lightning, wind gusts and hail hit NSW - ABC News

Spectacular lightning has lit up Sydney's night sky with severe thunderstorms hammering parts of New South Wales, causing property damage in parts of the state and widespread power outages.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for a large part of NSW, including Sydney's metropolitan area, Wollongong and Orange.

Wind gusts as high as 111 kph were recorded at North Head, 104 kph at Fort Denison and 102 kph in Richmond, while the Bureau of Meteorology issued an alert for dangerous driving conditions.

Nowra airport has seen gusts of wind at around 90 kph per hour and 49 millimetres of rain between 8:00pm and 9:00pm on Tuesday.

Large hail was reported near Wollongong and Mittagong, while more hail and heavy rainfall was expected to impact parts of the Hunter, mid-north coast, Illawarra and metropolitan areas.

Sydney Trains said the severe weather conditions were causing delays to services, with lightning strikes affecting infrastructure as well as trees on the line in multiple locations.

Ausgrid warned people to stay away from fallen power lines and stay at least eight metres back.

The Bureau reported destructive winds near Gilgandra, north of Dubbo, resulting in major property damage around 11:30pm.
