Sydney news: Dust storm sweeps through state's central west, fire lit in Sydney - ABC News

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Dubbo dust storm

A huge dust storm has swept through Dubbo, in the state's central west, with wind gusts of over 100 kilometres per hour.

After sweeping through Dubbo on Sunday night, the storm continued towards Parkes before moving to the central ranges, affecting multiple communities.

Jordan Notara from the Bureau of Meteorology said dry conditions exacerbated the storm.

"Drought conditions through the Central West Slopes and Plains have been very heightened … that again, coupled with some severe thunderstorms in the area yesterday afternoon, did see dust fly into the air as we saw those gust fronts occur from those storms."

Fire lit in Sydney's south-west

A woman has been charged with damaging property by fire after a blaze broke out in Bass Hill.

Officers were called to a hotel on the Hume Highway following reports of a fire.

It was extinguished and no-one was injured in the blaze

The 40-year-old woman was arrested at a home in Fairfield and will appear at Bankstown Local Court today.

Kangaroos harmed in Hunter

Police are appealing for assistance after three kangaroos appear to have been deliberately injured in the state's Hunter region yesterday.

About 8:00am on Sunday, officers were called to the Wollombi Park in Muswellbrook after a bushwalker located three kangaroos seriously injured in scrubland.

Officers believe two kangaroos may have been deliberately run over while a third kangaroo, which was found dead, had suffered a wound to the chest.

As investigations continue, any witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision in the area at the time is urged to come forward.

Largest cull in history

The State Government will work with scientists to undertake the largest feral animal culling program in the state's history following recent bushfires.

More than a third of the state's national park land has been burnt by this season's bushfires, with dozens of threatened species teetering on extinction.

The NSW National Parks Association stressed the importance of the cull, saying "feral predators like foxes and cats find it much easier [to hunt] in a burnt landscape".

"Having effective control programs right now, as all of these species are trying to recover from this devastating series of fires, is incredibly important," executive officer Gary Dunnett said.

Friday's weather

Cloudy with a high (80 per cent) chance of showers. Light winds becoming south-easterly 15 to 20 kilometres per hour in the early afternoon then becoming light in the evening.
