Kath and Kim star Jane Turner awarded Medal of the Order of Australia - NEWS.com.au

Australian actor, comedian and Logie Award-winning comedy writer Jane Turner has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) on Australia Day, for her service to the performing arts as a writer, actor and comedian.

Turner, who has appeared in many popular Australian TV programs since 1983, is best known for her role as Kath Day-Knight, alongside Gina Riley’s Kim Craig, in iconic comedy Kath & Kim.

She’s one of 837 “outstanding and inspirational” Australians who were honoured with an Order of Australia award, as part of the Australia Day 2020 Honours.

“Dedicated, committed, selfless – the people recognised today are outstanding and exemplify the best of Australia. I congratulate them,” Governor-general and Chancellor of the Order of Australia, the Honourable David Hurley, said.

“Behind every medal and citation is a story. Whether through their service, sacrifice or significant achievement, these people help others and make our towns, communities and nation better.”

There are four levels of the award:

AC: Companion of the order of Australia, for eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or to humanity at large.

AO: Officer of the order of Australia, for distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or to humanity at large.

AM: Member of the Order of Australia, for service in a particular locality or field of activity, or to a particular group.

OAM: Medal of the Order of Australia, for service worthy of particular recognition.

These are some of the other notable recipients on the Australia Day 2020 Honours list.

KEITH URBAN

The New Zealand-Australian country music singer, songwriter and record producer will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to the performing arts as a singer and songwriter, and to charitable organisations.

Urban, who resides in Nashville with his wife, Australian actress Nicole Kidman, and their two daughters, is a four-time Grammy Award-winner and in 2012, was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry, one of country music’s highest honours.

The singer is also being recognised for his philanthropic work – having supported important causes like St. Jude, All For the Hall, music education and more. Most recently, he and Kidman pledged their support to Australia’s bushfire relief, jointly donating $500,000 to local fire services.

IAN HEALY

Australian cricketer Ian Healy will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to cricket at the national and international level as a player, to the broadcast media, and to the community.

During his time as an Australian wicket keeper – spanning between 1988 and 1999 – Healy played more than 100 tests, and was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2008.

Since his retirement, he’s worked as a sports commentator and motivational speaker.

HUGO WEAVING

Australian actor Hugo Weaving will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to the performing arts as an actor, and as a mentor of young writers, directors and film makers.

Weaving is best-known for his roles as Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy, Elrond in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies, V in V for Vendetta and Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger.

CAMPBELL NEWMAN

Former Queensland premier Campbell Newman will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to the people and parliament of Queensland, particularly as premier, and to local government.

Newman served as the 38th premier of the state, between 2012 and 2015, was the leader of the Liberal National Party from 2011 to 2015, and was the 15th Lord Mayor of Brisbane between 2004 and 2011.

BARRY O’FARRELL

Former New South Wales premier Barry O’Farrell will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to the people and parliament of NSW, particularly as premier, and to the community.

O’Farrell served as the 43rd premier of the state and Minister for Western Sydney between 2011 and 2014, and was the leader of the NSW Liberal party between 2007 and 2014.

He is now the President of Diabetes Australia and CEO of Racing Australia.

AMANDA VANSTONE

Former Australian politician Amanda Vanstone will be appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for distinguished service to the parliament of Australia, to the people of South Australia, and to the community.

Vanstone was a Liberal Senator for South Australia for 23 years, and was the only female member of the Howard Cabinet following the 1996 election that brought the coalition to power.

TED BAILLIEU

Former Victorian premier Ted Baillieu will be appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the people and parliament of Victoria, particularly as premier, and to international engagement.

Baillieu was a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1999 until 2014, representing the electorate of Hawthorn; and was elected leader of the Liberal Party in opposition in 2006.

In 2010, Baillieu became premier of Victoria, a position he held until 2013.

CAROL (CARLOTTA) SPENCER

Transgender Australian cabaret performer and television celebrity Carlotta will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant service to the performing arts and to the LGBTIQ community.

She began her career as an original member of the long-running Les Girls cabaret show, eventually becoming its most famous member and helping cement the show as a must-see attraction for international celebrities visiting Sydney.

Carlotta and the Les Girls took the show on-the-road, touring Australia and inspiring the film Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and in the early 1970s she underwent gender reassignment surgery.

Her appearance in Number 96 was the first time a transgender actor played a transgender TV character anywhere in the world.

TIM MINCHIN

Australian composer, musician, comedian, actor, writer and director Tim Minchin will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the performing arts, and to the community.

Minchin is best known for his musical comedy, and he is the composer and lyricist of the Tony Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated show Matilda the Musical.

ROBERT PENFOLD

Veteran journalist Robert Penfold will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the broadcast media and to journalism.

Penfold has been a reporter for the Nine Network since 1976, and was the network’s US correspondent for 22 years.

In 2006, Penfold was awarded the Walkley Award for his coverage of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans.

JOHANNA GRIGGS

Television presenter and former Australian swimmer Johanna Griggs will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to community health, to television and to sport.

In 1990, she won a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke event at the Auckland Commonwealth Games, but her swimming career was cut short after a battle with chronic fatigue syndrome three years later.

Griggs has hosted numerous events – including the Australian Open, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and the Melbourne Cup – for the Seven Network since 1993, and has been the host of Better Homes and Gardens for 15 years.

RACHEL GRIFFITHS

Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe award-winning Australian actor and director Rachel Griffiths will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the performing arts as an actor.

Griffiths is renowned for her roles in Muriel’s Wedding, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Six Feet Under and Brothers & Sisters.

In 2015, she made her debut as a director, and in 2019, she produced and directed the Michelle Payne biopic, Ride Like a Girl.

KATE MCCLYMONT

Walkley Award-winning journalist Kate McClymont will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to the print media, and to investigative journalism.

McClymont is best known for her work exposing corruption in politics, trade unions, sport and horse racing, particularly her series of articles about NSW Labor Party politician Eddie Obeid.

PETER OVERTON

Journalist and television presenter Peter Overton will be appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to broadcast media and to the community.

Overton has been the chief newsreader for Sydney’s 6pm edition of Nine News since January 2009, has reported for 60 Minutes, and has held positions at 2UE, Sky News Australia and the Seven Network in Adelaide since his career began in 1985.
