Debris recovered as search resumes for light plane missing off Moreton Island - ABC News

Authorities are yet to confirm whether debris found in waters off Moreton Island belongs to a light plane missing with two people onboard.

A mayday alert was sent from the plane at 4:30pm on Wednesday.

The aircraft was on a scenic flight from Caloundra, and was believed to be north of the island when it disappeared.

Water Police, Redcliffe Coast Guard, Bribie Island Volunteer Marine Rescue, and five fishing trawlers searched in the area until midnight.

Lauren Smit from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said AMSA's jet and two rescue helicopters also took part in the search.

"So we've had quite extensive search operations overnight.

"Search operations were suspended at about midnight — there were quite challenging conditions with rough seas and storm activity in the area. Those searches have resumed this morning at first light."

Debris was recovered floating in the water south-east of Cape Moreton but AMSA has not confirmed if it is from the aircraft.
