A 20-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm after allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old man in the Sydney CBD last night in a 'one-punch' attack.
Police were called to St Andrews Square about 8.30pm on Saturday after reports the 22-year-old had been punched in the face, fallen to the ground and hit his head.
The man was unconscious when police found him and took him to St Vincent's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with head, brain, and dental injuries.
Shortly after, police arrested the 20-year-old who they took to Day Street Police Station and charged with reckless grievous bodily harm. He was refused police bail and will appear in Parramatta Bail Court today.
The 22-year-old was in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Sydney's recently-repealed lockout laws were first introduced in 2014 after a series of violent incidents, including "one-punch" assaults. Mandatory minimum sentences for people convicted of fatal "one-punch" assaults were also put in place.
In a separate incident on the other side of Sydney on Saturday evening, a 17-year-old boy was stabbed in St Ives.
The boy was waiting for a friend at Barra Brui Playing Fields in St Ives when, police were told, five other boys approached him.
One allegedly hit the boy with a tree branch and then stabbed him twice in the shoulder while another allegedly hit him with a skateboard. A third allegedly threw an unknown "metal object" at the teen, which made him drop his phone.
The group allegedly stole the phone before running away. Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
