Sydneysiders heading home for the weekend caught in train chaos - 7NEWS

City workers heading home for the weekend are being told to expect widespread train delays.

Sydney's public transport network was plunged into chaos on Friday morning and won't fully recover by knock-off time.

The advice from Sydney Trains is simple - get on the first train remotely heading in the right direction.

"When travelling during these major delays we advise to take the first train towards your destination, even if it means changing trains later, as stopping patterns will change at short notice," a Tweet from Transport for NSW read.

The account also asked prospective passengers to consider leaving work early, if possible, or delay any "non-essential travel".

It's the same advice travellers have been hearing all day after a mechanical fault saw the system grind to a halt about 7am.

Sydney Trains said the issue was due to a damaged roof hatch on top of a train.

It was perilously close to live electrical wires.

"The incident follows the discovery of a damaged roof hatch on a Tangara train that was found to be off its hinges and close to touching the 1500 volt overhead wiring," a Sydney Trains spokesman told 7NEWS.com.au.

"To safely isolate the power and remove the hatch, a section of the T1 North Shore Line had to be closed for three hours, causing significant delays across the network."

More buses will be allocated to compensate for the timetable delays.
