Engineering firm 'weak as piss': minister - NEWS.com.au

Federal Resources Minister Matt Canavan is not resiling from calling an engineering firm "weak as piss" and a "bunch of bedwetters".

Senator Canavan targeted Aurecon - which has ended its relationship with Adani's Abbot Point Coal terminal after being the target of climate activists - in an article published by The Courier-Mail on Thursday.

He accused the firm of giving in to protesters.

"People of regional Queensland have kind of got over caving in to this kind of behaviour and conduct, it has to be called out, it's exactly what they've done," Senator Canavan told ABC's Radio National.

"Apologies with being up front with people."

The minister believes Aurecon is being disingenuous to the public about its reasons for cutting ties with Adani, as it will continue to work on other coal ports with other companies.

"I'd have a lot more respect for Aurecon if they came out and were just up front and said: 'Look, we can't do this because we're under pressure and we're just too weak'," he said.

"To come out and try to wrap it up as a sustainable decision, give me a break."

An Adani spokesperson said in a statement the company was surprised by Aurecon's decision and was already in talks to replace it to ensure the mine goes ahead.

"There has been a concerted campaign by extremists against our Carmichael project and businesses that partner with us," the statement read.

"It has not succeeded and construction of the Carmichael project is well and truly underway."
