Melbourne Express: Indian restaurant burglary, headlines, trains, roads and weather - The Age

And that brings Melbourne Express to a close this morning.

The Lygon Street trams are slowly rumbling along their tracks again, and the only issue on the trains appears to be minor delays on the Frankston line.

We'll have all the latest from State Parliament and the courts today, as well as all the updates on the Docklands' closed pier.

Looks like the sun is out in the city right now, and we're expecting a cool but dry day.

Have a great day and we will see you bright and early tomorrow!

We had plenty of responses to today's Target word. It was one of those times when the answer jumped out at me immediately 😉

Very quick work from Susan Munday, Jo Marshall and We are all Eves (their Twitter handle, obviously!).

Yesterday's answer was SUCCULENT.

Here is the latest on the unsafe Docklands pier from our breaking news team.

Businesses at Docklands' Central Pier will be forced to shut their doors for at least a month after the events hotspot was abruptly evacuated on Wednesday night, Charlotte Grieve reports.

Hundreds of people were told to leave venues after engineers advised Development Victoria the pier needed to be closed as it had rapidly deteriorated and was unsafe for use.

Development Victoria chief executive Angela Skandarajah said the government had been working for over two years to monitor and repair the stability of the pier.

"We received advice from our engineers around midday yesterday that it was unsafe so we promptly took action to advise the tennants and vacate the pier," she told radio station 3AW.

Bashed paramedic Monica Wood has been in the 3AW studio after her attacker, James Haberfield, yesterday avoided jail.

"I was in disbelief. The magistrate did not make eye contact with any of us," she told Neil Mitchell.

"He is being treated like the victim here. There's no punishment for him putting drugs in his system, and punching me in the face, and pinning me at the back of the ambulance."

An earlier "traffic incident" on Lygon Street has led to tram delays and bumper-to-bumper traffic for city-bound peak-hour commuters this morning.

But Yarra Trams says services should be back on track soon.

And here's a recap of our top story:

It was a cold night to be hanging out – or even through – city roofs overnight. But one prospective cat burgler clearly had a hankering for a curry.

Police were called to an Indian restaurant on Collins St just before 1.30am after reports of an alleged burglary.

The offender had reportedly forced his way into the restaurant, but then tried to flee police by climbing into the roof.

However, the man's foot broke through the plaster ceiling, which left his legs dangling through the ceiling. The 41-year-old man, of no fixed address, was eventually arrested, charged with burglary and going equipped to steal.

And in police media's own words, there was "naan stolen". Hope he received something to eat in custody.

And just when you thought your transport disruptions were over, Monday marks the start of the Flinders Street closure for Metro Tunnel works.

A section of the street between Elizabeth and Swanston streets will be closed for three years.

Trams will continue to run, except from October 2 to 7. The footpath will remain open past Degraves Street.

North Melbourne will be outraged. Not for the first time, and probably not for the last, the Kangaroos have been on the wrong end of a line-ball All-Australian call, writes Daniel Cherny.

The Roos were already vocal about the absence of consistent key defender Robbie Tarrant and resurgent ruckman Todd Goldstein from the 40-man squad. So expect the club to again be exasperated after Ben Brown, and particularly Ben Cunnington, were overlooked from the final 22 unveiled last night.

Cunnington is the classic hard-luck case. The inside midfielder is no frills and notorious for his aversion to the limelight. He's old-fashioned enough that he didn't know about Brad Scott's imminent departure from Arden Street until he arrived at Marvel Stadium for the round 10 game against the Western Bulldogs.

Weekend events, including weddings, are being cancelled amid fears the pier will be closed for at least a month.

Our breaking news team will have all the latest for you shortly.

Trams will be brought to a standstill today.

Trams will be brought to a standstill today.

Melbourne's trams will come to a standstill for four hours tomorrow as workers step up their fight for a 6 per cent annual wage rise.

About 1500 drivers and customer service personnel at Yarra Trams will down tools for four hours between 10am and 2pm.
