Royal Adelaide Hospital staff given instructions on how to open doors

A HUGELY expensive new $2.3 billion hospital, which has been plagued by teething troubles, is spending more money teaching staff how to open doors.

Highly educated staff that routinely perform lifesaving surgery apparently need to be instructed to use two hands while opening doors at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, The Advertiser reports.

The memo from the Central Adelaide Health Service, which runs the hospital, comes with explanatory pictures just in case they need further reassurance on door-opening techniques.

Staff are informed to assume a “lunge position”, use two hands if at all possible and to use the weight in their legs and bodies to push the door open, rather than their hands.

Sage advice for us all.

The Health Service has defended the instruction leaflet, saying some of the doors in the new hospital were particularly heavy.

The detailed door instructions come as the Royal Adelaide Hospital struggles to find its feet in the months since it opened, following cost blowouts during construction.

Built in the city’s CBD over redundant railway sidings, the 800-bed building is one of the most advanced medical facilities in Australia. But it hasn’t had an easy time after opening last year.

Parts of the hospital were plunged into darkness earlier this year due to a sustained blackout, including in the middle of some operations.

In February, large batteries at the hospital ruptured spilling acid and contaminating one person.

Meanwhile, the state government admitted it may have to rebuild some wards due to them being too small.
