It's 'insane' partners of MPs can't work for them, says Barnaby Joyce

"It's insane to think that if [Vikki] did want to work for me, she couldn't."

Mr Joyce also spoke on the arrival of his son Sebastian Joyce, who he and his former staffer Vikki Campion welcomed at Armidale Hospital on Monday.

“Look we’re just enjoying our own company and just trying to be a family and hang around the dinner table which I really enjoy,” he said.

“Look I know that it’s peculiar circumstances and I know that people have their pluses and minuses about it but I am going to try and do the very best job I possibly can and make sure Seb has the very best Dad he can possibly get.”

Mr Joyce also slammed Financial Services Minister Kelly O’Dwyer’s refusal to concede the federal government erred in delaying the banking royal commission.

“Clearly, we have all been appalled by a number of issues that have been aired at the royal commission. There is no question of that,” Ms O’Dwyer told ABC’s Insiders on Sunday morning.

“But the government has been very alive to the problems in the financial services industry and we have been acting from the get-go”.

The Turnbull government called the royal commission into the banking sector last year after repeated delays and amid mounting pressure from Labor, some National MPs and the Greens.

“I know where Kelly is, I understand she’s got the talking points… well screw ‘em up, throw ‘em away, and say ‘actually, I am going to speak straight down the barrel about what is the truth. This is wrong, we are going to deal with it, I take responsibility for it, I am acting on it, next question,’” Mr Joyce said.

Mr Joyce also apologised for “arguing against the royal commission”, saying to “give him some grace” for changing his views.

“I am seeing more information than I have ever seen before,” Mr Joyce said.

“In the past… I thought a senate enquiry would pick this information up, that ASIC would pick this information up, that APRA could pick this information up, that you could have a joint parliamentary sitting that could pick this information up, that you could have questions in Question Time that could pick this information up. I thought that was the case. Now, I was wrong.

“I’m seeing it. I am seeing people basically saying that their organisation lied ... Well man oh man, if you lied, mate, you’re for the high-jump”.
