Melbourne man Yiwei Chu still missing as search turns to Werribee Gorge

THE family of missing Melbourne man Yiwei Chu received news on Friday that police had found his car.

It was a breakthrough after more than two weeks of searching for the 28-year-old from Mount Waverley who was last seen at Hungry Jack’s at midday on April 11.

Mr Chu’s 2016 Toyota Camry was spotted off Myers Rd at Werribee Gorge State Park, a 1.5-hour drive from the home he shared with his wife, Emma Wang.

Police began a search of the gorge shortly after 3.30pm on Friday with the help of the Search and Rescue squad and SES. They continued searching on Saturday and found no sign of Mr Chu — who also goes by the name Carl.

It’s been a torturous time for his parents and wife who are hoping for good news.

On social media, Ms Wang published her phone number and begged anyone with information to get in touch with her.

“I thought he would be in that car,” she told Fairfax on the weekend, admitting the discovery of the vehicle increased her fears.

“I don’t know how to describe (this feeling),” she said. “Worried, tired, upset and a bit disappointed. Originally I didn’t think he went missing, I thought that maybe his phone was out of power. After one hour, I thought maybe he was involved in a car accident or something like that.”

Mr Chu was supposed to collect his wife from work on April 11 but never showed up. His phone was off so she left messages telling him she would meet him at home. When he failed to arrive, she alerted police.

Mr Chu has not accessed his bank cards or used his mobile phone since April 11, police say.

Inspector Tony Cecchin said police had drawn a blank.

“Whether his disappearance has been intentional or otherwise we simply don’t know — there may be another sinister connotation attached to it,” Insp Cecchin said. “Certainly there’s potential for that.”

At an emotional press conference announcing a $10,000 reward for information about Mr Chu, his wife fought back tears.

“I just want him to come home. I can’t think too much or think other things,” she said.

The missing man’s father, Jianqiang, flew to Melbourne from China to issue a plea to his son. “At home, grandmother, father and mother miss you so much. Hopefully you can contact us as soon as possible,” he said through an interpreter. “Our family, without you, how do we live on? Come back to us.”

Mr Chu has been living in Melbourne for almost a decade and was a student at Melbourne Institute of Technology.

He was wearing a brown and cream camouflage jacket over a T-shirt with a picture of Snoopy on it at Notting Hill Hungry Jack’s on April 11.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
