Water-bombing aircrane lands in dam while fighting fires in East Gippsland - The Age

One of the state's water-bombing aircranes fighting fires in Gippsland has ditched into a dam in small rural township in Victoria's east.

The two pilots and an engineer, who were inside the aircraft when it crashed into the water, were able to swim to safety to the edge of the dam.

The water-bombing aircrane landed in the dam during operations over the Thomson Complex Catchment fires in Gippsland, a State Control Centre spokeswoman said.

Emergency services were called to Nine Mile Road in Jericho about 7.15pm on Monday following reports the aircraft had landed in a dam.

It is not clear at this stage what caused the aircraft to land in the dam, however, there are unconfirmed reports the aircraft may have flipped while scooping out water.
