Son allegedly shoots dead mother, brother in family dispute across Victoria-NSW border

A family dispute, which spanned both sides of the Victoria-New South Wales border, has left a mother and son dead and another son in a critical condition in hospital with what police described as self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The ABC understands the alleged gunman was Paul Cohrs, 58, a former deputy mayor of the Wentworth Shire Council.

Key points:

  • The ABC understands the three people involved were a mother and her two adult sons
  • The incident will be investigated jointly by Victoria and New South Wales police and spread across three crime scenes
  • Police have seized weapons and vehicles and want to speak to any witnesses in the area around Rufus River Road

His mother, Bette Schulz, 82, was found dead from a gunshot wound at a home on Snowy Avenue in Red Cliffs, in Victoria's north-west about 12:30pm yesterday.

A four-year-old boy related to Ms Schulz was also at the home, but police do not know if he witnessed the shooting.

About an hour later, another shooting was reported, this time at the home of the Ms Schulz's son, Ray Cohr, who lived on Rufus River Road, about 120 kilometres west of Red Cliffs, on the New South Wales side of the border.

Ray Cohr, 63, was found dead on the remote rural property, and another man at the property, aged 55, who has not been identified, was not injured but had been held against his will.

Police later found Paul Cohr another location on the property about 3:00pm, with what they said were self-inflicted injuries.

He was taken to a Melbourne hospital and is in a critical condition under police guard.

A number of weapons and vehicles have been seized, police said.

They are not looking for anyone else in relation to the shootings but they are looking for witnesses.

"If you were travelling on the Rufus River Road or Old Renmark Rd yesterday please contact us," said Superintendent Paul Smith of NSW Police.

"You may have seen something that you're not aware of even if you haven't seen a vehicle.

"We are interested in a white Landcruiser… [and] its wider movements through Victoria as well.

"We have possession of a couple of vehicles of interest."

Police would like to talk to the person who called them to report the Red Cliffs shooting.

The man in hospital had a New South Wales address, police said, but was connected by family in Mildura.

Police said the investigation would be long and complicated, spanning both sides of the Murray River and spread over three crime scenes.
