A family holiday has taken a tragic turn when a father and his young son drowned at Airlie Beach on Queensland's Whitsunday coast.

A five-year-old boy and a 30-year-old man, believed to be overseas tourists, were swimming at the Airlie Beach Lagoon yesterday afternoon when tragedy struck.

The pair were pulled from the water unconscious at about 4pm before going into cardiac arrest.

Emergency services arrived and witnesses say the boy was taken into the ambulance to be treated while paramedics and members of the public worked for up to 40 minutes to save the 30-year-old man.

The pair were transported to Proserpine Hospital in a critical condition, however both sadly died a short time later.

Hundreds of people, many of them children, were cooling off at the popular swimming spot in the middle of Airlie Beach when the incident occurred.
