Sydney man to undergo de-radicalisation program after pleading guilty to planning terror attack

A Sydney man has pleaded guilty to planning a terror attack and preparing for foreign incursions.

Tamim Khaja, 20, was accused of committing an act in preparation for or planning a terrorist attack between about May 11 and 18 and preparing for incursions into foreign countries "for the purpose of engaging in hostile activities" between January 29 and February 27.

The Macquarie Park resident, who was a a teenager when arrested, was allegedly in the process of trying to obtain a firearm and had been sizing up public buildings in Sydney when he was arrested in May in a joint federal-NSW police operation.

Khaja also allegedly tried to travel to Syria but was stopped at Sydney Airport because his passport had been cancelled.

He will take part in a de-radicalisation program, the court heard this morning.

Khaja originally pleaded not guilty and his trial was to start today at Parramatta Supreme Court, but he changed his plea this morning.
