Student rejects award from ‘No’ voting MP

A Year 12 student has announced she will be returning an award she received at her graduation ceremony after finding out it was sponsored by a local member of parliament who does not support same sex marriage.

Grace Gouldstone, from Duncraig Senior High School in Perth, received the “Ian Goodenough award for a positive attitude and contribution to the school” but has refused to keep it as she feels the MP does not support the values that the award reflects.

Gouldstone outlined her reasons for rejecting the award in a letter to her principal.

“Mr Goodenough publicly voted No for the same-sex marriage postal vote and to me this does not reflect the positive beliefs of valuing diversity, inclusivity and most especially equality,” she wrote.

Mr Goodenough responded to Ms Gouldstone’s comments by congratulating on her award, even though she chose not to accept it.

Heroin injecting room gets green light

The first trial run for a safe injecting room for heroin addicts has been approved in Victoria.

The injecting centre will allow addicts a safe space to take heroin where doctors and counselling services are on hand and will be trialled in Melbroune’s inner suburb of Richmond.

Cabinet’s approval of the trial comes amid a growing heroin crisis in the state, with the trial reportedly set to be run for two years followed by a review.

If the trial goes well and the room is given the go-ahead it will be the second establishment of its type in Australia, with the first being set up in 2001 in Kings Cross in Sydney, NSW.

The centre is set to open in North Richmond amid a growing heroin crisis.
