Man stabbed to death, woman on the run after fight outside pub

The late-night killing of a man on an inner-Melbourne street has not shocked the local mayor who describes the busy strip as a "war zone" beset with drug-fuelled violence.

The man was stabbed on the footpath of Victoria Street, Abbotsford, during a fight outside the Bakers Arms Hotel with a woman about 9.30pm on Monday.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital, but later died.

It is not clear whether the man and the woman knew each other. She was still at large on Tuesday afternoon.

Forensics police were seen carrying large bags of evidence from the street shortly after homicide squad detectives arrived and began door-knocking nearby businesses.

Detectives spent hours inside the Bakers Arms Hotel and at the neighbouring restaurant, On It Burgers.

The restaurant, which has security cameras aimed at the footpath, was open until 10pm on Monday. The pub also has security cameras outside.

Police remained tight-lipped on the case, however, and declined to reveal if detectives believed it was a random or targeted attack and if alcohol or drugs were possibly involved.

A staff member at the Bakers Arms Hotel, who did not want to be identified, said they knew nothing about what happened until arriving for work on Tuesday morning and, as far as they knew, the pub had nothing to do with the incident.

Detectives had also urged witnesses to keep quiet about what they saw.

"The cops told me not to talk, so I'd rather not say anything," one witness said.

The crime scene was walking distance from what could become a trial site for Victoria's first supervised drug injecting centre for heroin addicts.

The state government has approved the trial, after earlier ruling it out.

Yarra Mayor Amanda Stone said she was saddened to hear of the man's death, but believed such crimes were far less likely to occur when the injecting site was up and running.

"I think we need to establish that it was drug-related, but it certainly does underline the need for a supervised environment where people can be connected to services and have a safe place to be," she said.

"It's felt like a war zone down here for local traders and residents.

"They're facing the consequences of public drug injecting use every day. They're picking up syringes, they're calling ambulances, they're doing CPR."

Several Victoria Street traders, who didn't want to be identified, said they saw a large police presence on Monday night, but they thought nothing of it because it's such a common occurrence.

Nearby resident Phil de Pyle, who was walking his dog in the area on Tuesday morning, said he wasn't surprised to hear of the killing either.

"Around here, the residents don't feel safe," he said.

"I come down here most days for a coffee and I see drug dealing happening openly on the street corner, you see people shooting up."

He said he supports opening a safe drug injection centre, as do many other residents.

"It's going to get the problem off the streets," he said.
