Man charged over ramming police vehicle in Bourke Street incident

A 26-year-old man has been charged after an incident on Bourke Street that sparked fears of a repeat of the tragedy at the same location early this year that claimed six lives.

The man appeared to be unconscious when he was spotted in a car with a smashed windscreen parked on the busy strip on Tuesday evening, police said.

The man is accused of driving toward police, and ramming a police car, when officers approached the vehicle just after 5pm, a police spokeswoman said.

A witness, who didn't want to be identified, said the car had mounted the footpath outside the McDonald's outlet on Bourke Street and looked "pretty smashed up".

Police pulled out a Taser and used it on the man, before arresting him.

Officers later found two guns inside the vehicle.

Half the road was blocked off and a large police presence attended the scene as paramedics took the man to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

The man, of no fixed address, has been charged with conduct endangering life.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court later on Wednesday.
