Kevin Rudd, Alan Jones unite on foundering Turnbull

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd and conservative shock jock Alan Jones have found a rare moment of unity on ABC's Q&A.

Both Rudd and Jones declared the Coalition would lose the next election if Malcolm Turnbull remained as prime minister.

"Someone's got to have the guts to stand up in the party room and say there's an elephant in the room here, we can't win with this bloke in charge," Jones said.

"Who's going to put their hand up, that's up to the party to decide."

Rudd was in rare agreement with Jones, reporting back from the "hustings-land" on the prime minister.

"I was actually surprised in Queensland how down people were on Malcolm," Rudd said.

"I had not encountered that before on previous conservative leaders."

Rudd said the "massive mismanagement" of the NBN could inflame voters across the country, especially in typically conservative regional areas.

The former prime minister added that Foreign Minister Julie Bishop could pose a threat to Turnbull.

"I think Julie could do it," he said.

Jones, fresh from coaching a near-victorious Barbarians side over the Wallabies, had kind words for Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

"Shorten's no mug, no political mug," Jones said.

"When he goes out into the supermarkets and the shopping centres, or when there's a flood-ravaged area, Bill Shorten has a way of resonating with these people."

But Rudd and Jones did not agree on everything, with the radio host taking umbrage with the ex-PM calling US President Donald Trump "nuts".
