Two dead after crash on busy Sydney motorway involving truck, two cars

TWO people have been killed after a horror smash on one of Sydney’s busiest motorways on Tuesday afternoon.

Police and emergency services rushed to the M1 Motorway north of Sydney about 4.50pm following reports of a crash involving a truck and two cars.

NSW Police confirmed two people had died but they are yet to be identified.

The truck, travelling northbound near the Hawkesbury Bridge at Mooney Mooney, crashed into the back of the two cars and caught fire, police said.

It’s not clear if the deceased were driving the cars or the truck.

Pictures from the scene show the vehicles sustained significant damage. Firefighters extinguished the flames but it was too late to save the occupants.

All lanes northbound have been closed and authorities are expecting extensive delays. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and use an alternative route if possible.

Seven News reports traffic is backed up 9km from the crash site not far from the small waterfront township of Brooklyn.

The M1 north of Sydney is regularly the site of serious crashes. A truck crashed and caught fire in March at Mooney Mooney, causing a 5km traffic jam.

In 2014, a truck driver “made a stupid mistake” by taking his eyes off the road and running into a teenager in a broken down car at Mooney Mooney.

She was killed on impact.

Anyone with information about Tuesday’s incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
