Several inmates escape Greenough Regional Prison

A MANHUNT is underway near Geraldton tonight after several inmates escaped from Greenough Regional Prison during a 'disturbance' inside the jail.

An urgent warning has been issued for residents living in area to lock their doors and windows and to also ensure their cars are locked if they are driving in the area.

There are unconfirmed reports up to a dozen prisoners had escaped.

Police have confirmed four inmates have been recaptured but others remained on the run.

Locals should lock house and car doors and stay inside

An ambulance has arrived and smoke was earlier seen coming from inside the prison compound, according to witnesses at the scene.

Prisoners are being returned to their cells so authorities can determine how many inmates are still on the run and identify who they are.

The Department of Corrective Services is working with police to ensure the situation is dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The prison houses male and female prisoners in maximum, medium and minimum security units.

WA Police were notified a disturbance inside the jail about 4.30pm and issued a warning to residents.

“There is currently a disturbance occurring at the Greenough Regional Prison involving inmates,” a WA Police spokeswoman said.

“There are reports several inmates have escaped and maybe in the nearby surrounding area.

“We urge the public to ensure that all their doors and windows are locked and if driving in the area to keep doors locked.”

The prison, opened in 1984, has a capacity of 332 inmates.
