Severe thunderstorm warnings for Melbourne outereast, central Victoria

MELBOURNE’S sky was lit up as severe thunderstorms hit Melbourne’s southeast and west and parts of Victoria overnight.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued several severe thunderstorm warnings on Thursday night as at least three large storm cells appeared off Mordialloc Beach, near Melton and in central Victoria on Thursday evening.

The thunderstorms travelled southeast, dumping heavy rain, with Dandenong Creek near Greens Rd, Keyborough copping 36mm in the hour leading up to 11pm, with Eumemmering Creek in Lyndhurst (26mm) and Hallam Valley Countour Drain near Narre Warren (20mm) also hit hard during the same period.

Lightning strikes caused signalling faults on the Sunbury and Frankston railway lines, with Metro reporting trains delays of up to half an hour.

Thunderstorms also hit regional Victoria, with a separate warning issued for the state’s north central and central districts. As of 10pm, the bureau warned the storms were likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over several hours.

Locations which may be affected include Seymour, Melbourne, Yarra Glen and Frankston.

The bureau earlier predicted storms would affect Koo Wee Rup, northern Western Port waters and Tooradin before hitting Lang Lang and the area north of Bass.

An earlier severe thunderstorm warning for the wider Gippsland area was cancelled.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.

* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.

* Keep clear of fallen power lines.

* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

* Don’t drive, ride or walk through flood water.

* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.

* Be alert that in areas recently affected by fires, heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.

* Stay indoors if possible.

* Avoid using the phone during the storm.

* If you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees

* Listen to the radio for storm updates

* Switch off your computer and electrical appliances
