Police have shot dead an armed man who pointed a sawn-off shotgun at a shop attendant during a bottle shop robbery in Melbourne.
The 48-year-old man, yet to be formally identified, was shot dead by police at about 9pm last night in Park Orchards, according to police.
Police were in the area responding to reports of a hold-up, when there was allegedly an armed confrontation and the man was shot.
The owner of the bottle shop, Xueqiang 'Sean' Wang and his son, Kevin, arrived at their business this morning.
"I'm a very lucky man," Mr Wang told 9NEWS.
"I'm sad, it's very very bad.
"Thank you to police."
Meanwhile, police removed the body of the offender just before 6am.
"One of the investigators involved took immediate action because he was very concerned about the firearm threat to the single attendant that was working the bottle shop," Acting Deputy Commissioner Ross Guenther told 9NEWS.
"As a result of that action, the person who withdrew the firearm is deceased," he said.
A 49-year-old man and a 50-year-old man were also arrested shortly after the shooting and are assisting police with their investigations.
The homicide squad and the professional standards unit are investigating the shooting.
