Queensland weather: Thunderstorms forecast for parts of southeast Queensland

THE new year looks set to start with a bang for many Queenslanders, with a severe thunderstorm warning being issued for parts of the state’s southeast.

The Bureau of Meteorology at 5.44pm issued warning that a very dangerous thunderstorm was detected on the weather radar near Redbank Plains and Bundamba Lagoon.

“The very dangerous thunderstorm is forecast to affect Logan City and Sunnybank Hills by 6:15 pm and Beenleigh and Mount Cotton by 6:45pm,” the Bureau said.

“Damaging winds and very large hailstones are likely. A 91km/h gust was recorded at Dalby at 1.27pm.”

Another severe thunderstorm was detected on the weather radar near Laravale. It is forecast to affect Beaudesert and Canungra by 6:15 pm and Mount Tamborine by 6:45pm.

Storms were also detected for people in the Logan and parts of Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Gold Coast, Redland City and Brisbane City council areas.

Power outages were reported in the Ipswich area, with more than 1300 homes losing power about 5.30pm.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia and Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.

A slow-moving surface trough above the western Darling Downs combined with a series of upper level troughs are causing the instability across the state’s southeast corner, and the storms are expected to be more severe than those experienced on New Year’s Eve.

Falls of up to 40mm were recorded at Obi Lookout in the Sunshine Coast hinterland while closer to the coast Coolum with 25mm, Palmwoods with 27mm, and Noosa (16mm) all saw good rain while 19.4mm fell at the Sunshine Coast Airport in little over an hour.

Falls were heavier to the north with Hervey Bay recording 55mm and Howard 57mm.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Aditi Sharman said the BOM would provide updates through the day and urged people to check the rain radars if they heard approaching thunder.

“It’s more unstable than yesterday,” Ms Sharman said. “Severe thunder storms are likely.”
