Shannon Lowden, Caleb Forbes: Family pays tribute to killed campers - NEWS.com.au

The brother of Shannon Lowden, who was found dead alongside Caleb Forbes on Friday has paid tribute to the “loving and kind” sister who had been missing for almost a week.

“Rest in paradise to my beautiful sister Shannon, the first best friend I ever had,” her brother Callum Lowden said in a statement shared with the ABC.

“My heart is truly broken right now and we miss you so much already. Every day of my life I will remember the loving and kind person you always were. Forever in all of our hearts, you will always be by my side. I love you.”

Police are investigating the cause of death for the pair who were due to return home on Saturday after a camping trip.

They were found dead in their car on Trig East Track, around 11am on Friday. Police are yet to reveal how the couple died but footage from the scene shows a badly-damaged Nissan Patrol on its side against a tree at the base of a steep incline.

The couple had not been heard of since Ms Lowden, 21, text her mother last Friday. Their families had conducted an extensive search with Ms Lowden’s brother, Callum, writing on Facebook earlier they had searched with helicopters and specialised team on the ground.

“The support over the last 48 hours has been overwhelming and myself and my family are very grateful for all the love and support everyone has shown. If I haven’t replied to your message yet, it’s not because I don’t care, there’s just a lot to get through,” he said on September 10, before the couple was found.

Shannon’s family have remembered her as a bubbly and happy person, with mother Debbie Lowden saying she was adventurous and kind.

“She’s a very outgoing person, a very bubbly person,” Mrs Lowden said. “She likes to be the centre of attention. She’s the type of person who would do anything for her friends.”

Ms Lowden would be “dearly missed”, Croydon North-MLOC Football Club president Graham Hewitt told AAP.

“She loved the outdoors. She is just an outgoing, lovely 21-year-old girl. She did not miss a social night, she loved having a giggle,” he said.

“She is loving, caring, friendly. We are a new women’s footy club and all the girls are aching. The 32 girls just love sport and love each other as a family.”

A widespread land and air search ended when the couple was found dead at about 11am on Friday in their green 1994 Nissan Patrol wagon near Trig East track.

“I am not in a position to tell you what happened right now,” Inspector Shane Cashman told reporters.

“It’s a very difficult track to negotiate.

“It’s almost a sheer drop to the side and we’ll put some work into finding out the causation as to what’s actually occurred to make that car leave the road.” Insp Cashman said the couple’s families were devastated, and it was a tough result for searchers.
