Police have released a computer-generated image of a man who allegedly sexually assaulted and attempted to rob a teenage girl on the Gold Coast.

A girl in her late teens was walking along Mattocks Rd in Varsity Lakes about 8.10pm when she saw a man arguing on his phone.

Police said as she walked past he attempted to grab the bag off her shoulder before touching her inappropriately.

The girl was able to run back the direction she came to a place of safety.

She was not physically injured during the incident.

It is believed the man fled along Mattocks Rd empty-handed.

Police patrols at the time failed to find him.

The man is described as caucasian with a proportionate build, around 30 years old, 180cm tall and with blonde hair.

He was wearing a black pull over hoodie, dark grey tracksuit pants and orange shoes.

Anyone who recognises this man is urged to contact police.

Officers from the Burleigh Criminal Investigation Branch are investigating.
