A volunteer firefighter is critically ill in hospital with serious burns after an out-of-control bushfire destroyed his fire truck in NSW.
His hands, arm, legs, back, face and airways were burned on Friday while he and a colleague fought the Mount Mackenzie Road fire, which has burned more than 3500 hectares south of the Tenterfield township.

"Sadly, this injury serves as a sobering reminder about how dangerous the conditions are, and the risks that our firefighters take to protect their communities," the NSW Rural Fire Service said in a statement on Saturday.
Here's what we know.
NORTHERN NSW BURNS
* More than 60 bush & grass fires are burning across NSW - including about a dozen which are out of control
* The worst blazes are at Drake, Legume and Mount Mackenzie in the Tenterfield area and at Bees Nest near Armidale.
* The Bees Nest fire has burned through 50,000 hectares - double the size of the City of Sydney council area. It remains at emergency level, threatening Tyringham, Dundarrabin or Bostobrick.
* The Drake fire, at 14,000 hectares, is also at the emergency warning level. It's threatening Ewingar, Tilbaroo and areas on the western side of the Clarence River.
* An evacuation centre has been set up at Tenterfield Showgrounds
* Police say four homes have been destroyed but RFS says reports are unconfirmed.
* One volunteer firefighter, fighting a large blaze south of Tenterfield, is in a critical-but-stable condition in hospital. His colleague was uninjured but the fire truck they were in was destroyed.
* Disaster grants are now available for affected communities through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements
