A man has been arrested over the suspicious death of a woman, whose body was found in Melbourne’s Chinatown.
The 32-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning this afternoon, police said.
The woman, reported to be aged 33, was found about 6.30am at the intersection of Little Bourke St and Celestial Ave.
She is yet to be identified.
An autopsy will be undertaken to determine the cause of her “suspicious” death, police said.
Acting Superintendent Craig Peel told reporters earlier in the day he believed the woman was already dead when a member of the public reported her body in the street.
Victoria Police said the body was found slumped against the wall by a tradesman who quickly raised the alarm.
Paramedics were called to the scene but the woman could not be revived.
Despite being found early this morning, the body was still on the scene at 1.30pm, the Herald Sun reported.
Police have been tight-lipped about the circumstances of the woman’s death.
“My very early reading of that is she was (already) deceased but I can’t confirm that at the moment, we’re still in the early planning stages,” Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Craig Peel told reporters earlier today.
“A member of the public did call triple-0 and reported the incident.”
“The exact cause of the woman’s death is yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing,” police stated.
A coroner van is reportedly on the scene, with an autopsy planned for later today.
Authorities are reportedly using CCTV footage from nearby businesses to try and piece together exactly what happened to the woman.
3AW has reported the woman’s body was lying in the gutter and covered by a paramedic blanket.
