Man charged with murder after body discovered in Chinatown - Herald Sun

A man has been charged with murder after a woman’s body was found in the heart of Chinatown on Bourke St this morning.

Police charged the 32-year-old Cowes man with one count of murder, hours after the body was discovered near the corner of Little Bourke St and Celestial Avenue just after 6.30am.

Detectives made the arrest after viewing CCTV footage from the area.

A post-mortem examination is being conducted on the woman.

A source said the woman, believed to be aged 33, had “no obvious signs of injury”.

Police cordoned off Little Bourke St between Russell and Swanston streets after a passer-by made the grisly find.

Traders were refused entry to businesses within the police cordon for most of the day.

That section of the normally bustling street packed with restaurants was almost empty.

The woman’s body was still at the site at 1.30pm as evidence was gathered.

Her identity has not been released.

Police said her next of kin has yet to be told of her death.

Dozens of curious onlookers gathered at either end of the police cordon as the crime scene probe continued throughout the day.

Police earlier escorted traders into their shops to review CCTV footage from overnight. Forensics officers took photos in Celestial Ave near where an SES tent had been erected in the laneway.

A passer-by said the incident was concerning.

“It’s shocking news. Something no one was expecting,” he said.

Paramedics were called when the discovery was made but the woman could not be resuscitated.
