In a move that may surprise many, Peter Dutton has gone full zen and revealed he’s studying meditating.

The Home Affairs Minister said he believes meditation can help people in high-pressure jobs deal with stress and depression, and allows him to switch off after a long work day.

“I have recently taken up meditation,” Mr Dutton told Nine’s Today on Friday morning.

“A couple of good mates who have been very successful in sport and business swear by it.

“I think in long days where you are up at 4.30 and catch the 6am flight and still going at 10 that night, it clears the mind and (is a) quick process during the day. Each to their own.”

Basic meditation typically requires a beginner to close their eyes while sitting or lying down, and attempt to focus their mind while concentrating on their breathing for a set period of time.

The 48-year-old said mental health was “very important” to him, and it should be a priority for all men of his age.

Mr Dutton also confessed to being “adverse to pain” and therefore tattoo-free, after being asked about Attorney-General Christian Porter’s recent ink.

Mr Porter fulfilled an election promise on Saturday to get a tattoo if he won his marginal seat of Pearce with an increased majority. He now has an X-Wing Starfighter, from the Star Wars film franchise, permanently inked on his left rib cage.

Labor leader Anthony Albanese described Mr Porter’s tattoo as “really ordinary”, saying it looked like a spider.

But Mr Albanese wouldn’t say whether he has any ink himself.

“You’ll never find out,” he said.

When asked what tattoo he would get, South Sydney fan Mr Albanese said: “It could be a little rabbit or something … for the Bunnies.”
