Chris Dawson — charged with murdering his wife Lyn — has been charged with a sex offence relating to his time working as a teacher on Sydney’s northern beaches.
The police strike force set up to investigate sexual assaults and student-teacher relationships at schools on Sydney’s northern beaches as a result of The Teacher’s Pet podcast series charged the 70-year-old today.
The former teacher — who this morning pleaded not guilty in court to the cold case murder of Lynette Dawson — was arrested by detectives at Surry Hills Police Station just after midday.

At a police press conference in Sydney this afternoon, Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec of the child abuse and sex crimes squad, would not name the man charged.
However he did not correct a question from a reporter who assumed it was Chris Dawson.
“How did Chris Dawson react when he was charged?” asked a reporter.
Mr Kerlatec responded: “The person charged has been given bail and will be appearing in court. I can’t say much more than that.”
Mr Kerlatec said the police had arranged with the man’s lawyers for him to be brought to the police station after a court appearance earlier in the day.
“Shortly after twelve midday today a 70-year-old man was charged here at Surry Hills police station with an offence of carnal knowledge,” Mr Kerlatec said.
“The 70-year-old-man was charged with carnal knowledge in respect of a 16-year-old girl, who in 1980 was 16.
The charge of carnal knowledge was given as it was the relevant charge under the law in 1980.
It relates to a sex offence between an adult committed over a minor.
Mr Kerlatec would not answer questions about the penalty the offence would bring, but said police were “providing as much evidence as we can for the court to adjudicate on the innocence or guilt of the person which is what our role is in this matter”.
“All sexual assaults are treated very seriously.”
“I would add that anyone with any other information, please come forward. We treat all these matters very seriously.”
Mr Dawson has been granted strict conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday, August 8, 2019.
Strike Force Southwood involves detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad and local detectives and was set up to investigate the actions of teachers from northern beaches schools in the 1970s and 1980s, following The Australian’s investigative podcast series The Teacher’s Pet.
