A major police operation has been set up to investigate the deaths of a woman and a three-year-old girl at a lookout near Wollongong this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Robertson Lookout, Mount Keira, about 1.50pm after reports of a concern for welfare.
A woman and a young child were found dead below the lookout.
Distressing scenes have played out at the scene, 9 News Sydney reports.
They say there are a number of people believed to be family members at the scene, “distraught”, crying and hugging one another.
Earlier reports from the incident suggested a group of people had either fallen or jumped off the cliff, but when police arrived there were no other victims.
A crime scene has been set up as officers from Wollongong Police District conduct inquiries.
Harry Graham Drive, the access road to the lookout has been closed.
Multiple emergency services vehicles are at the site as police interview witnesses.
The police rescue team is working to retrieve the bodies in the treacherous terrain.
The Toll rescue helicopter has been used to survey the scene from the top as police conduct the meticulous operation to recover the woman and child.
“It’s steep, it’s hectic, we’ve got police coming in from the low side, police trekking down from the high side and the consideration of the helicopter,” Wollongong Police District commander superintendent Chris Craner told reporters at the scene.
“It’s a treacherous, dangerous area we need to get to, to respectfully get these people out.”
Supt Craner said emergency services were doing their best to comfort and console family members at the scene.
“It’s going to be absolutely devastating for the community who don’t know these people and hear this and what it’s about,” he said.
“It’s going to be devastating for the family and my thoughts are also with the emergency services here today.”
He said he expected the recovery operation to continue into the evening.
